JACKSONVILLE – The lights were on, and the fight was real.
Prime-time energy was there, too.
What wasn’t there was a Jaguars victory, with season-long issues of missed opportunities and mistakes factoring heavily in a 23-7 loss to the surging Baltimore Ravens Sunday in front of 68,021 in the Jaguars’ first Sunday Night Football appearance in 15 seasons.
“We can’t get out of our way,” Head Coach Doug Pederson said afterward.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence lost two fumbles in the game, and Pederson the third-year veteran was evaluated following the game and will be in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Lawrence did not speak to the media following the game, with NFL rules not allowing players in the protocol to do so.
The Jaguars squandered four first-half scoring opportunities – with kicker Brandon McManus missing field goals of 50 and 55 yards and Lawrence losing a second-quarter fumble at the Ravens 19.
The Ravens led 10-0 at halftime, with the Jaguars reaching the Ravens four and allowing time to run out at the end of the second quarter.
The Jaguars moved past the Ravens 40 on four consecutive first-half drives without scoring.
“That’s the head-scratcher; that’s the frustrating part,” Pederson said.
Running back Gus Edwards’ short touchdown run opened the fourth quarter and pushed a three-point Ravens lead to double digits, with Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker extending the lead with two short field goals midway through the quarter.
The Jaguars (8-6) lost their third consecutive game. They are tied with the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans in the AFC South at 8-6, and remain in first place because of a head-to-head sweep of the Colts and a better division record than the Texans.
