How to play Powerball
Want to play Powerball, but not quite sure how it works? Here are some things to know.
- To play Powerball, you first select five white ball numbers. These five numbers will be between one and 69. Then, pick one “Powerball,” or red ball, number. This number will be between one and 26.
- For an extra dollar, you may choose to “power play,” which multiplies all non-grand prize winnings by a factor of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10.
- If you match at least one number in the Powerball drawing, you win a prize.
How long before Powerball reaches $2 billion?
There’s no definitive math on when or if the jackpot will hit $2 billion, but after 35 rollovers with the current pot so far it’s probably pretty close.
Based on the trajectory of last year’s $2.04 billion lottery frenzy, there could be at least one, maybe two more before the jackpot hits that high.
How likely are you to win the Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot?
The lotto numbers start to rise and you dream of what you could do with all the winnings, but the chances of winning big are pretty slim.
Lottery games are mostly only lucrative for the private companies that states hire to run them, said Lew Lefton, a faculty member with the Georgia Tech School of Mathematics, in a USA Today article. In fact, winning big in Mega Millions and Powerball is even harder now because recent rules make the odds even longer so lottery games can sell more tickets, he added.
The overall odds of winning a Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
