The FDA posted a recall notice with “Urgent” at the top Wednesday, which it rarely does no matter how massive the recall or immediate the food safety danger. But, this recall involved turkey gravy and the agency posted it the day before Thanksgiving Day.
But, the vast majority of you can remain calm.
This involves lot No. A3CG162M A3CG192M of 12-ounce jars labeled “Hy-Vee Turkey Gravy,” so jars most likely bought at one of the 240-plus Hy-Vee stores.
“Labeled” because what’s inside the jars from manufacturer Seneca Foods probably isn’t turkey gravy, but, rather, beef gravy. Now, while that would be infuriating from a culinary standpoint anytime, doubly so on Thanksgiving (especially because all of Hy-Vee’s stores are closed), what prompted the recall is beef gravy has soy. Turkey gravy does not.
So, the jar’s ingredients don’t list soy as an allergen. There’s no warning for people with a soy allergy, who can suffer mild to fatal consequences from eating the beef gravy.
If have a jar from the recalled lot, return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund. Questions about this recall can be answered by Seneca Foods at 800-872-1110.
